Real or Paleo Food Resources Near East York, Toronto
As the farmer’s market season winds down, it becomes a bit more difficult to eat organic and local. But there are still quite a few resources out there. Here’s a few of our favourites near the StrengthBox gym in East York, Toronto.
A great delivery service with a strong local mandate. Many of our members use Mama Earth to get organic vegetables and fruit delivered weekly right to their door. They work with local farmers and artisans and deliver their food boxes throughout the city. Want to skip a week or make substitutes? No problem with Mama Earth.
Acropolis distributes real olive oil from Crete, Greece. Handpicked, first cold-pressed, unfiltered, this olive oil is not blended, but is produced from a single farm using a single press. While the oil is now carried by a number of retailers nationwide, it is available in various sizes right in the StrengthBox gym. Check out the new gift boxes of biodynamic olive oil and mousto balsamic vinegar, available at a special price in time for the gift-giving season.
Also right around the corner is Fisherfolk, who are committed to providing the highest quality Canadian fish and seafood, while respecting the oceans and local fishing community. You can find their products in various markets, but on Friday’s they operate a retail operation right on Northline Road, around the corner from the gym. Paleo diet fans – don’t forget the fish!
This local market has partnered with Ontario’s Mennonite and Amish communities to retail quality, hormone-free natural food. They help bridge the divide between urbanites and rural farmers and help ensure fair prices for producers. Local fruits and vegetables can be found in the spring and summer months, but in the winter they continue to carry beef (both grain and grass-fed options), pork, chicken, elk, eggs, some frozen fish and a variety of grocery items. Located at 350 Donlands near O’Connor, the store is open from Tuesday to Saturday.
This health food store is located on Lawrence Avenue East near Warden and carries a host of grocery items (including fresh produce and meat), natural health and beauty products, eco-friendly cleaning supplies, and supplements. We like the fact that it’s a family-run store and prices are very reasonable. Free parking in the plaza.
A larger health store option is the new Healthy Planet, located on the Golden Mile in the Parkway Mall. From sports nutrition to groceries, they have a very wide selection and are open 7 days a week.
